Chinese scientists describe the plan as a core part of a broader asteroid defense system now under study. On the ground, China will deploy multiple large-aperture optical telescopes at selected sites, forming a balanced network to search the night sky over wide areas with high precision. In orbit, China intends to launch a constellation of monitoring satellites beyond Earth’s atmosphere, designed to watch directions that ground observatories often miss because of sunlight and atmospheric glare. Together, these assets are meant to work like one giant sensor.

How China Plans To Eliminate Dangerous “Blind Spots”

Chinese officials say their goal is simple but serious: eliminate blind spots in current asteroid detection, especially from the sunward direction where some of the most dangerous surprise rocks can come from. Ground telescopes struggle when the sun’s light scatters through the atmosphere, so they miss objects approaching from that side of the sky. China’s planned space-based monitoring constellation is meant to look back toward the sun, free from clouds and day–night limits, catching threats that might otherwise slip past until it is too late.

China’s network is planned to run day and night, with the space and ground pieces working in tight coordination. When a telescope finds a suspicious object, software will automatically calculate its orbit and estimate the chance it could hit Earth. If that risk looks real and urgent, authorities would be alerted and, according to Chinese statements, the public would receive clear information and guidance. This kind of automated pipeline echoes what American and European systems already do, but Beijing is now racing to match and eventually shape global standards.

Radars, Defense Blueprints, And The Push For Planetary “Shield” Tech

China is not only building telescopes and satellites; it is also expanding a powerful radar array called the “China Compound Eye,” or Fuyan project. This radar network uses many antennas working together to act like one very large system, bouncing signals off distant objects to image and track them in deep space. Chinese experts claim that after the second phase is finished, they will be able to observe asteroids only dozens of meters wide from about 10 million kilometers away and study how their orbits change after being hit.

Chinese scientists have also unveiled a broader blueprint for near-Earth asteroid defense, framed as a concept under the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space. That plan covers monitoring and early warning, in-orbit handling, and what they call systematic response, aiming for a full detection and defense system. It includes an integrated space-ground warning network capable of precise alerts in routine operation, moving China from simple sky surveys to an organized planetary defense architecture. Beijing clearly wants to be seen as a responsible power, even as it builds tools that also boost its strategic position in space.

What This Means For The United States And Its Allies

China’s move fits a pattern seen with other major space powers: once they prove key technologies, they announce bigger defense systems. The United States, through the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), has invested in surveys and tested kinetic impact deflection with the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission. Europe’s space agency is building its own Flyeye telescope network and a planned infrared mission called Near-Earth Object Mission in the InfraRed (NEOMIR) to watch for “rogue rocks.” Planetary defense is now a global race, and America cannot assume automatic leadership.

For conservative Americans, this development raises both risk and opportunity. On one hand, a more capable China in space means more leverage for a rival regime that does not share our values, especially on transparency, property rights, and freedom. On the other hand, real asteroid threats do not care about borders, so cooperation frameworks must protect U.S. sovereignty while sharing vital data. The Trump administration’s job is to keep America’s planetary defense strong, push for clear rules in space, and ensure that any joint projects do not hand Beijing control over global warning systems.
